Training your eye

Northwind’s pricing page passed every test before launch. But the plan names sit in headings that barely stand out, so visitors skim and leave without choosing. You met the six lenses last lesson. Naming them isn’t seeing them.

Judgement is trained by deliberate comparison, in three moves.

1. Compare two versions and choose the stronger one.
2. Name the reason it works.
3. Test that principle somewhere else.

A worked example

Run the loop once. Northwind’s tagline, two ways: “Sync everything.” and “Sync everything.” Compare, then name the difference: smart quotes, the curly marks (“ ”) that replace a keyboard’s straight ones (” ”). Test it elsewhere: a straight apostrophe (’) where a curly one (’) belongs is the same rule.

Train your eye across the domains

Six comparisons follow, in terms you haven’t been taught yet. That’s deliberate: react first, pick the stronger option, then read the explanation that names it. Wrong picks you understand teach fastest.

Practice: the 5-second scan

Open a page, run a five-second timer, then look away. Note the task, the main action, and anything unclear. Reopen and check. The gap you close over a month is the eye training itself.
